Chapter 2

Cold blue eyes never leaving the pained but furious green ones of his opponent, Luke felt the whish of air against his back as the doors to the interrogation room slid shut just behind him, locking the two of them inside the small room. His gaze momentarily shifted out the large window of black glass that covered the entire front of the small room, his eyes narrowing as he openly gazed at the back of his father who stood meters away on the command platform.  Knowing he could see out the window but his father would only see a mirrored black surface from his side, Luke let the anger towards his sire simmer for a brief moment before turning his full attention back to the woman now threatening him with a blaster. He felt a shudder of satisfaction at how she kept the arm he had obviously injured so close to her chest. "You might want to put that away," he nodded toward the deadly weapon she held, his words as feral as the anger that coursed through him.

Mara's fingers tightened around the weapon even though she knew he could disarm her if he chose to, his little display of supremacy with the turbolift had violently reminded her of the power he truly possessed. "So you can finish killing me?" She asked, sarcasm masking the unease she felt.

Luke laughed, startling Mara with how light and melodic the sound was. Her brow furrowed, Mara kept the blaster trained on the former Jedi as he began to move around the room both of them had used for many interrogations in the past, his fingers trailing lightly over the large metal table he was intentionally putting between them now.

"I have no desire to kill you, Jade," Luke confessed as he leaned over, fingers closing over the arm of a chair that had been overturned, probably when he had tossed Mara into the room.  Grasping the cold metal, Luke began sitting the chair upright as he continued to explain.

"I only want…"  His eyes once again meeting those of Mara, there was no mistaking the murderous glint to Luke's stare and the intent behind the snarled words. "…to teach you who is in control here,” the darkened man clarified, flinging the chair he held across the table that separated them and directly at the woman who had never wavered her aim of the blaster toward his heart.

Her finger squeezing the trigger instinctively as her body tensed, Mara's shot scorched the metal of the door to the side of them, the one Luke had thrown her threw moments before. Twisting her body further away to avoid the deadly missile of the thrown chair, Mara's arm lowered just enough for Luke to seize the moment and change the battle.

His hand slapping flat against the metal surface of the table, Luke's lower body twisted over it, his palm the only part of him that touched the table as he vaulted over it.  Landing on his feet with barely a thud, blond hair tousled slightly as Luke twisted sharply, his leg striking out, his foot connecting with Mara's armed hand.

Crying out in pain, Mara had no control over her fingers instinctively flexing open and letting go of the blaster as she stumbled backwards from the impact, the backs of her legs striking the only other few chairs that were in the room. Reacting slower than usual and carefully keeping her throbbing arm and shoulder away from him, Mara's fingers formed a fist and she jabbed a punch at Luke's face.

Easily sidestepping the woman who was still off balance from the turbolift injuries, Luke goaded her with a small laugh. "Now where is that deadly assassin I hear so much about at?"   He moved quickly around her, shoving chairs out of his way and forcing her to turn in a tight circle to keep her eyes on him, just as his were on her. Laughing as he completed a full rotation around her, Luke could easily see her struggling with pain and dizziness. “Where is that assassin?”

Her own lips curling in amusement as her next punch caught the edge of Luke's chin, sending him back against the metal table he had sprinted over to reach her, his shoulders thumping against the table surface as he landed. "She's right here," Mara answered, her fraying braid flying through the air as she pivoted on her heel, a lean leg coming up, a booted foot slapping Luke across the face just as he pushed himself back up from the table.

Her arm tightly tucked, pain still radiating through it from her crash against the turbolift door, Mara tried the same move again but it proved to be once too many.

Catching the foot being swung at him once again, Luke's fingers dug into the soft leather of Mara's boot for a fraction of a second before he pushed against the lethal limb.  Wasting no time, Luke was scrambling toward Mara even as she was still tumbling backwards. He was already upon her as her body collided with the floor, his snarl of anger mixing with her grunt of pain.

The wind knocked out of her as her back slammed against the metal panel floor, Mara began kicking and punching wildly as Luke lunged toward her as a wild cat would the prey he happened upon.  Her head lolled side to side from the impact and her eyes caught the glint of metal on the floor not far from her but just as she thought of reaching for the blaster she had landed near, she could hear the weapon sliding further away from her. Feeling the glimmer of hope slip away, Mara let thoughts of holding that blaster against the heart of the man above her fuel her anger. She grimaced in pain as she fought him furiously, her legs and arms scratching, kicking, slapping…anything she could to keep her predator at bay, anything to keep the man holding her down from taking advantage of her sprawled and defensive position on the floor.

Having returned to the bridge of the Executor right after watching his son stop Mara Jade’s retreat, Lord Vader’s satisfaction at Luke’s dark actions were only marred but an unexpected shiver that ran up his back. Shrugging it away, the Dark Lord greedily let each unguarded burst of anger from his son and Mara feed his own darkness, hungrily taking in the raw mixture of fury and fear. So evenly matched, he thought to himself, having watched them both carefully over the last few months, wondering which one would truly end up being better suited for his own purposes.

Mara Jade was as deadly as they came, allowing the dark side of the Force to flow freely and completely through her, but she was limited by her control of that energy while Luke was truly a master of the Force But his son, up until now, had been limited by just how much of the darkness he allowed deep inside his soul. Though Luke had accepted his dark heritage, Vader knew some spark of good was still left, buried deep inside his son and that made Luke unpredictable and dangerous. But now, just from the faint sounds he could hear from the interrogation room, Vader felt as if for the first time, his son was truly allowing the dark energy to fill his body and dictate his actions.

Turning away from the front viewer of the massive ship, Vader's gaze shifted from the stars to the large black glass that ran across half of the space behind the command center, a mirrored surface that was the only thing separating him from whatever was happening between his son and Mara Jade.  Another identical black mirror was on the opposite side of the ship, divided by the metal walkway that led from the turbolifts to the platform he now stood on. Smiling behind his mask, Vader wished the mirrors were not only a way for people inside the interrogation room to see out to the command center and platform, but that he could see into the room also. Turning back toward the large viewer that allowed him an unobstructed observation of the planet they orbited, Darth Vader resisted the urge to tap into the link between them, feeling satisfied that Luke was the one with the upper hand in this encounter and that finally things were becoming exactly as they should be. Perhaps Mara pushing his son too far was just what Luke needed to thrust him over the edge and allow him to accept the dark energy that only served to increase his power and make him the kind of apprentice Lord Vader truly wanted. His gaze steady on the redish planet below the Executor, the ruthless ruler knew sending Luke and Mara back to the surface for a final mission would either complete his son’s voyage into darkness or destroy all the progress made so far. He had no doubt that his son would find the desired targets, just as he had this last mission that had almost ended in disaster, but he had reservations about Luke following through with the elimination of these targets. Eyes narrowing as he scanned the distant surface of the planet, Vader wondered if Luke would be able to kill the rebel scum hiding below, a princess and a smuggler who Luke had once called friends.

The mere thought of them sent a rush of anger through his body and he let that anger carry over into the Force, surprised when it answered him back in kind. Dark fingers of the energy wrapped themselves around the heart it had turned black long ago and Vader let it consume him. He could feel and hear the dark whisperings of the Force and he knew he couldn’t ignore the warnings. The time was coming; Luke and Mara had made it inevitable with their inability to coexist, when a decision would have to be made as to which one of them would take a permanent place at his side as his dark apprentice.

And which one of them would die by his hand.
